Hairold (チョキル?, Chokiru) is a character encountered in Barbershop Land and Barbershop Tower in Rhythm Heaven Megamix.

Description[]

Hairold is a barber who wears a big, red hat, a pink shirt with scissors on it, red pants and white shoes. His hair covers his eyes, and he has a particularly toothy grin. He introduces himself as the master of the dual-wield scissors, and is very passionate about styling hair[1]. Despite having three black belts in hair, he has never heard of a heavenly cut[2], and does not believe that Heaven World exists[3].

Story[]

After Tibby and the player pass the Gatekeeper Trio's trials at The Second Gate, they gain entry to Barbershop Land. Here they meet Hairold, whose barbershop has lost its flow, and customers along with it. Because of this, Hairold has had to eat his own hair, and cover his head with a hat[4]. To help him, they must clear four Rhythm Games. After clearing them, Hairold is back in business, and unlocks the door to Songbird Land. Here he demonstrates his playstyle in rock-paper-scissors, believing that with his renewed barbershop, he will finally be able to win at the game[5].

After Barbershop Land has been cleared, Hairold may visit the Café as a customer, where the player can talk to him. He mentions that he owns a lot of bonsai trees, which he loves to snip[6]. He reflects on how he always loses at rock-paper-scissors[7], and talks about his excitement for the Hairnament, a haircutting tournament for stylists from all over. Despite his readiness, it turns out the tournament happened the day before[8]. He talks about how he takes care of his scissors as they are precious to him[9]. He shares a story in which he dropped his scissors in a pond, and a bearded man popped up, asking him he dropped a pair of shiny, golden scissors. Hairold lies and claims he did, and the bearded man disappeared, requiring Hairold to purchase a new pair of scissors[10]. He mentions a nightmare he had in which his scissors turned into a clothespin[11], and an occasion where Rupert came in for a trim, but Hairold couldn't do anything as Rupert does not have hair. Rupert was ultimately disappointed[12]. Hairold has a TV in the barbershop, and sometimes makes mistakes while watching[13]. An out-of-town stylist who is just starting her career sent a letter challenging Hairold to a duel. He isn't worried about losing to her, but is worried about the game of rock-paper-scissors deciding the winner in the event of a tie[14]. He mentions his hat has a chin strap to keep it from floating away, and his impressions of Dieter wearing a car on his head, which he at first mistook for him being run over[15].

Later on, after Tibby and the player clear Lush Tower, Tibby tries to use its power to return to Heaven World, but it is not enough. Trey informs him that they need a rainbow of power for that, after which the six towers appear, one of them being Barbershop Tower. Here, the player and Tibby encounter Hairold once again, who tells them that his tribe has been proud of their stylish tower, but have been slacking off on the maintenance, and as such it has lost its flow and stylish locks. To restore it, the player and Tibby need to clear the five Rhythm Games within[16]. Upon doing so, Hairold awakens the tower's secret power, which helps create the rainbow needed to reach Heaven World[17].

Hairold appears in Rhythm Tengoku The Best Plus Comic, first in Give it to me!, where Shep is looking for ingredients and mistakes Hairold for a red bell pepper, and in Rhythm Tengoku The Best Plus Comic 36ムラサキの女の人 (Purple Woman), where he wonders along with Eglantine what Shep and Rupert are talking about.

Trivia[]

  • The story Hairold shares where he dropped his scissors into a pond and was offered a pair of shiny, gold scissors by a bearded man is a reference to the fable The Honest Woodcutter, in which a woodcutter accidentally drops his axe into a river, and is asked by the god Hermes if he had dropped a golden axe. The woodcutter is honest, saying that is not his axe, and is then offerred a silver one. The woodcutter denies it again, and is granted all three axes for his honesty. His envious neighbor later tries the same trick, claiming the golden axe as his own, and is left with no axe as punishment for his dishonesty, which is also what happened to Hairold.

  2. "...What the heck is a heavenly cut? Seriously. I have, like, three black belts in hair. What is that?" ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  3. "Figures. It's super trendy in a place you basically made up." ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  4. "I got so few customers... I had to eat my hair and cover my head with this hat!" ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  5. "I'm feeling so good...I think maybe I can finally... WIN AT ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS! 1-2-3! Scissors!" ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  6. "Hey, it's you! You ever heard of "bonsai" trees? The real little ones? I love snipping those things. I have, like, a hundred. You wanna know how I trim them? Here, I'll demonstrate on your hair! Kidding, kidding! Loosen up--have some coffee." ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  7. "Hey, I got a serious question for you. Why am I so bad at rock-paper-scissors? I seriously NEVER win. Kids, old people--EVERYBODY beats me. Is it just bad luck? Or is it my strategy?" ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  8. "Hey, you! Lemme tell you why I'm so excited today! The Hairnament is coming soon! I can hardly wait! It's a haircutting tournament for stylists from all over! My scissors are sharpened, and my fingers are READY. Huh? How long until it starts? Here, lemme check my phone... It...was yesterday. Sniff. Snip. Sniff..." ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  9. "Hey, tell me what's the most precious thing you own? For me, it's my scissors. Obviously. You have to take care of your scissors or they'll rust. Remember to take care of the things that are important to you. 'Cause they might rust away on you. Whoa! That was, like, WAY deeper than I usually get. Anyway, coffee's good today, right?" ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  10. "OK, weird story: I brought my scissors with me on a walk the other day. And I accidentally dropped them in this little pond by the road. And this beardy guy pops out of the water! He holds up this pair of shiny, gold scissors. And he asks me, "Did you drop these?" You know me--I'm an honest guy. But they looked SO MUCH nicer than my scissors... I said, "Yup, totally mine." And beardy guy just disappeared! I never got my scissors back. I'll need to finance a new pair." ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  11. "Sorry if I look out of it--I had a bad dream last night. You wanna hear about it? I was oiling and polishing my scissors as usual... when they suddenly just turned into a clothespin! Brrr... Just thinking about it gives me the chills..." ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  12. "I had the weirdest customer the other day! He tells me "Just trim the bangs," but... forget bangs--guy didn't have a single hair on his head! Oh, also he was a talking snake in a pot. It took a long time, but I explained the problem to him. He said he understood and he left the shop, but... he was obviously super sad. Poor guy." ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  13. "One of my favorite things is watching TV. I've got a TV in the shop, so I can watch while I work. But sometimes that backfires... I was watching this show about endangered animals... and I made this guy look like a panda!" ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  14. "I got a visit from an out-of-town stylist yesterday. She handed me this letter challenging me to a duel! I guess she wants to do a contest of cool haircuts. She just got started, so she wants to build buzz. But I'm not worried at all. I can take any rookie! I'm a bit nervous about the last part of the rules, though. "In the event of a tie, the winner will be decided... by a game of rock-paper-scissors." Gulp." ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  15. "Hey, be honest--what do you think of my hat? Amazing, right? Some people think it looks too heavy. Not a chance! Actually, I wear a chin strap so it doesn't float away. True story! Oh, speaking of hats, I saw a doozy the other day. Talk about heavy hats--this guy had a car on his head! At first, I thought he'd been run over. But as a hairstylist, I try not to judge the heads of others." ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  16. "Take that! Snip! And that! Snip! Whoops! Snipped too much. Oh, hey. Welcome to Barbershop Tower. My tribe may be terrible at rock-paper-scissors, but... we've always been crazy-proud of our stylish tower. But...we've been slacking off on taking care of it, and now look. It's got a major case of what we hairstylists call... bed head. Shame on us. So, if you fellas can help us out... we can restore the tower's flowing locks! And I'll help you get home or cut your hair or whatever!" ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
  17. "You've fixed Barbershop Tower's flow! It looks WAY stylish now! Time to do my part! I'll awaken the secret power of the tower...by cutting it!" ~ Hairold, Rhythm Heaven Megamix
